THE INCIDENCE OF PARASITIC INFECTIONS IN KOREA

Abstract
On the basis of the available data that have been reported in this country on the incidence of parasitic infections caused by protozoa of the blood and of the reticulo-endothelial system, a review of the situation was undertaken by the author.
Among the haemoflagellates; Several cases of visceral leishmaniasis (Kala-azar) caused by Leishmania donovani have been reported about 20 years ago; however, these cases were not proved to be autochthonous. Since the interception of communication between north and south Korea, even a single case report has not been made, and there are no records available indicating the occurrence
of Phlebotomus sp. in Korea serving as a vector.
Among the haemosporidian parasites; Three Kinds of Plasmodia have been found. Plasmodium ovale does not occur in Korea. P. falciparum and P. malariae have been entirely recorded only from narcotic addicts. The infection among addicts is probably attributed to the common use of unsterilized syringes and needles for narcotics, and there are no adequate informations to verify the natural transmission of P. falciparum in Korea. However, Some possibilities of the natural infection of quartan malaria through anopheline mosquito are generally believed to exist. Plasmodium vivax is the only species known as responsible for human malaria in this country. According to the present epidemiological knowledge as obtained in Korea, there are still some residual foci with a high rate of transmission in the north-eastern mountainous area, while some areas in the south-western plain are non-active, retrogressive foci in the occurrence of tertian malaria.
Among the protozoan parasites of doubtful nature; The possible incidence of toxoplasmosis is apparently taken into account. The infection has been detected by several investigators in a swine host. However, a human case has not yet been recorded in this country.
